In the twelve years since the 2008 banking crisis, the UK has not regained its prior economic momentum and now faces a trio of further economic challenges. Measures to blunt the onslaught of the Covid 19 pandemic have caused the sharpest drop in gross domestic product for hundreds of years. Furthermore, the continued presence of the virus will damage the prospects of some sectors for a number of years. The Brexit extension period ends in December 2020 and a ‘no deal’ or ‘poor deal’ outcome of UK/EU negotiations will put a further burden on UK businesses. In addition, the climate emergency has now reached the top of the political agenda and rapid cuts to the use of fossil fuels are essential. Darren Jones MP, Chair of the cross-party UK Business Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee, will give his views on these issues and how the UK can achieve a successful business recovery strategy.
