Adam Posen

Member of the Monetary Policy Committee

Past Speaking Events


Adam Posen joined the Monetary Policy Committee on 1 September 2009. He is also a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, which he joined in 1997. His research focuses on macroeconomic policy and performance, European and Japanese political economy, central banking issues, and the resolution of financial crises.

He was previously a visiting scholar at central banks including the Federal Reserve Board, the European Central Bank, and the Deutsche Bundesbank. He has also been a consultant on economic and foreign policy issues to several US government agencies (including the Departments of State and Treasury, the Council of Economic Advisors, and the National Intelligence Council), the European Commission, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, the UK Cabinet Office, and to the IMF. He is in his second two-year term as a member of the Panel of Economic Advisers to the US Congressional Budget Office.

From 1994 to 1997, he was an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. In 1993-94, he was Okun Memorial Fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution. In 1992-93, he was resident in Germany as a Bosch Foundation Fellow. He received his Ph.D. and his A.B. (Phi Beta Kappa) from Harvard University, where he was a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the Trilateral Commission, and sits on the Board of Directors of Bruegel. He was a public policy fellow of the American Academy in Berlin in 2001, and a Houblon-Norman senior fellow of the Bank of England in 2006. He has been the recipient of major research grants from the European Commission, the Ford Foundation, and the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

Dr Posen is a US citizen and he lives in London.
